Bristol Palin used to date a boy named Johnny Chandler - actually, she was with him when she hooked up with Levi Johnston, which caused friction between the two school mates. Once Bristol dumped Johnny and went with Levi, it ruined the two teens' friendship.

And now that Bristol and Levi are no longer together, and the fighting between their two families has started (mostly over their baby Tripp), the 18-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, has turned to her ex-boyfriend, Johnny, for comfort.

A friend said, "Johnny feels terrible over what Bristol is going through. He thinks it's hard enough being a new single mom, and on top of it, she has to cope with a breakup that people the world over are talking about."

The source added, "Johnny cares deeply about Bristol, but he's still a little weary of them getting too serious again right now."

Johnny and Levi were once pals, but when Bristol dumped Johnny and hooked up with Levi, their friendship wavered and didn't recover for a very long time.

"Levi and Johnny had a big blowup during their sophomore year in high school when Levi and Bristol hooked up while she was still with Johnny. Bristol finally broke it off with Johnny for Levi, which pretty much ruined Johnny and Levi's friendship.

"Johnny forgave Bristol quickly because he cared for her so much, but it took a long time before he and Levi became tight again."

I'm not sure it's a great idea for Bristol to be dating anyone right now, so soon after her breakup with Levi. The two teen parents are at odds about their infant son and until they resolve their issues about the baby, not much else will fall into place. They need to concentrate on their son!

NYT: Levi Johnston v Sarah Palin book war?

Rex Butler is talking to the New York Times and keeping Levi under wraps. He's been on a bear hunting trip and hasn't returned as of Monday night. What's it all about? It doesn't sound like the negotiations are over, but what is the probability for a Johnston book?

If it is to materialize Butler says:

• “probably worth millions.”

• “Believe me, it’s a hell of a story.”

• “doesn’t want to give it all away right now,”

• “Quite frankly, I think it could affect 2012,”

• Mr. Butler likes to suggest that Mr. Johnston’s story could have an impact on her potential candidacy.

Executives at major publishing houses have not seen a book proposal, nor heard from an agent. There is a GQ magazine piece with a photo shoot in the works.

There he was on CBS’s “Early Show” this month, criticizing the message that his former fiancée, Bristol Palin, had just delivered on the “Today” show about how teenagers should abstain from sex. “It’s not realistic,” said Mr. Johnston, the father of Miss Palin’s son, Tripp.

And there he was chatting with Larry King on CNN in late April, complaining that the Palins “just pretty much blew us off” after Mr. Johnston and his mother and sister went on “The Tyra Banks Show” to air all manner of gripes.

Why, after months of Wasilla silence, has the sometimes painfully inarticulate teenage father decided to talk?

He certainly wants to write a book, the lawyer, Rex Butler, said by telephone, adding, “Believe me, it’s a hell of a story.”

Bristol Palin has also been out and about. As the new “teen ambassador” to the Candie’s Foundation, she has appeared on TV and in magazines to promote abstinence. Her high profile has ignited talk that she, too, could try to write a book. Robert Barnett, the Washington agent who negotiated her mother’s book deal, deflected questions about Bristol to the family’s spokeswoman, who denied any plans for a book deal.

The decision by the Johnston camp to go public seems to have been a reluctant one. Two nights before Mr. Johnston was to go on Tyra Banks’s show, Mr. Butler canceled the interview. Cathy Chermol, an executive producer, got him to change his mind.

As he stood backstage, Ms. Chermol recalled, Mr. Johnston seemed nervous and told her that his appearance at the Republican National Convention last August had not been entirely voluntary. “I wish I had still been hunting,” Ms. Chermol said he told her.

Bristol's team of lawyers, publishers, Bristol and Todd Palin are syrupy sweet working their not-at-war-side of the media games.

So it is complete and utter speculation on our part—and we invite you to knock this hypothesis down—but it would make sense to us if a Christian publisher, arguably best poised to engage Palin's likeliest core audience, didn't necessarily have the funds that would be needed to pin her down, especially given Barnett's track record in getting money out of publishing companies on behalf of politicians... But what if that Christian publisher had backing from a huge publishing conglomerate that did have that kind of money to spend? As we say, it's a hypothesis, and it might be completely wrong. But, however it happened, here's a more interesting question: Who gets the credit if the book's a hit—and who gets stuck with the blame if it's a flop?

UPDATE: Publishers Lunch now identifies HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray as the decision-maker on this deal, with the actual editorial duties being handled by Adam Bellow, one of the executive editors who survived February's Collins purge and is noted for his track record with conservative authors.

I went to Wasilla High School three years after Sarah Palin graduated. Holy Shit my brain just exploded.

I went to Wasilla High School in the 80s a few years after Sarah Palin graduated. It was a very traumatic experience that shaped my life. Wasilla is a very small town full of racist homophobic redneck "christians" who hated me because I wore an earring and wasn't a complete inbred backwoods dumb-ass. Nonetheless I got my ass kicked repeatedly and it was very cold and dark most of the time, but those two years gave me plenty of character, and I truly learned the power of ignorance. I ended up dropping out of high school...

I am told by reliable sources, but don't know for a fact, that the book deal recently in the news is worth an initial $2 million, with various clauses that could take it higher if the book sells.

As someone who was raised in Wasilla, Alaska, I can't help but feel a pride since the little town I spent most of my life in has been thrown into the national spotlight.

But the pride is mixed with a little embarrassment, since much of the coverage has been unfavorable.

Pundits have criticized Gov. Sarah Palin's lack of experience as its mayor, and Wasilla's rural location has been fodder for plenty of jokes. Tina Fey even called it "Alaska's crystal meth capital" while doing her impersonation of the governor on Saturday Night Live last week.

I personally have received no shortage of trouble about being from Wasilla. But after the announcement of Bristol Palin's pregnancy, the talk turned dirty.

More than once, people have joked with me about how surprising it is that I'm not pregnant. It's degrading as both a Wasilla resident and as a woman, and Bristol's situation is nothing to laugh about.

But since the announcement, the debate has turned to Palin's stance on sex education (in a gubernatorial debate she said she would not support explicit sex education), and it has caused me to remember my own sex education at Wasilla High School, the same high school Palin and several of her children attended.

To say it was lacking is far from accurate.

It was abysmal.

The only recollection I have of any sex education came in ninth grade health class.

An advanced human relations group put together a presentation explaining different types of birth control. They explained the difference between diaphragms, IUD's and birth control pills and told us where we could go to get them. And then condoms came up.

The student, a senior, held up a male condom to the class, still in its metallic wrapper. Then she told us that rules prohibited her from showing the actual condom. She couldn't show us how to put it on; she could only explain the principles of using a condom -- without pictures or demonstration. She could show us a female condom -- out of the package -- and explained how to use it, but also with no demonstration.

Another Wasilla High School friend (who also took the health class) and I recently talked about the Palin controversy, and sex education came up. He told me that for him, using condoms had been a matter of trial and error.

"Luckily, with no error," he said.

It struck a cord with me at how shockingly close sex education can hit home.

To me, there is no debate. Sex education should be as important as preparing students for the job market. My high school did a poor job at providing that education.

Despite state statistics that show the teen birth rate in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley -- where Wasilla is located -- is below the national average, Alaska as a whole is above it.

Abstinence-only education is great in theory, but it is not practical. For every emergency drill I went through to protect myself from an intruder or bomb threat, I think of the condom wrapped in foil and how unprotected I could have been.

I thought about the likelihood of an intruder attacking the school and the likelihood of students having sex before marriage. One seems much more probable.

Luckily for me, my parents were candid about sex and have made sure I know how to protect myself. But I can't forget my teenage classmates who became pregnant unintentionally while still in high school.

I would never discredit abstinence education. It's the only 100 percent effective birth control method. But let's be practical. Teenagers are going to have sex. Just telling a student that a condom exists is not enough information to keep them safe. Ultimately, schools should make sure that students are armed with the knowledge to protect themselves.

A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.
Ms. Havemeister was one of at least five schoolmates Ms. Palin hired, often at salaries far exceeding their private sector wages.

WASILLA, Alaska -- High school dropout rates remain an issue for educators and communities across the nation.

A recent study by Johns Hopkins University aimed to identify schools across the U.S. with particularly high dropout rates.

Several schools here in Alaska received failing grades. Of the 40 high schools in the state, seven made the list. One of them is in the Mat-Su District.

Students at Wasilla High School shuffle from one classroom to the next in a typical day. They stop at lockers between classes just like students at other schools and discuss the day's goings-on.

Today's conversations buzzed with news of a new distinction the Wasilla High students have earned, although it's not so noteworthy.

Wasilla High was named a "dropout factory" by the Johns Hopkins study.

"I know we're not a dropout factory, but somebody took some data and came up with that label for us," said Wasilla High School principal Dwight Probasco.

Probasco has been principal at Wasilla High for 15 years. He says hearing about the Johns Hopkins study came as a shock. He said he had heard nothing from researchers and didn't know of a community survey to gather the data.

The data used by Johns Hopkins researchers came from the National Center for Education and tracked senior classes for three years from 2004 until 2006.

Schools named as "dropout factories" by the study found that 60 percent or fewer of students who start as freshmen make it through their senior year.

Last year, Wasilla High's dropout percentage was 6.5 percent, a number much lower than the majority of all the schools in the Mat-Su School District.

"I do not believe that they're dropouts though," Probasco said. "I think the majority of them, wherever they go, are enrolling in another school."

The valley has a transient population. Students move in and out at all times during the year and enrollment drastically changes from one year to the next, according to Mat-Su School's director of education.

"We haven't been turning a blind eye to the fact that students do drop out of the Mat-Su School District and that we are accountable for keeping them in school," Susan McCauley said.

Susan McCauley says the school district has been focusing on ways to lower the drop-out rate for the last year.

She says there are three factors for dropouts in the Mat-Su District, including a history of failing grades, low standardized test scores and absenteeism.

Principal Dwight Pabasco dismisses the label of "dropout" factory and he can now void the example of Bristol Palin. Unlike her peer "Amber Baby" she didn't make the honor roll, but they did let her pass and remark 'that she was "point zero-zero-something" away from graduating with Honors' Seriously, who makes dumb remarks like that?

Something is wrong! First of all, this is Wasilla, the Meth Capital of Alaska, can't they give their students some standard of self respect? Next, this is Wasilla High School, named by John Hopkins as a 'dropout factory'. Why the financial burdened rinky dink rink with commercial clutter for background? They had to know Sarah would have her media darling Peeps to document the "regretting only that she was 'point zero-zero-something' away from graduating" crack, HoHoHo! It is graduation, the grads are entitled to celebrate, giddy and irreverent could come AFTER the ceremony. What a mockery. Blow-pops and lollipops, INDEED.

What are these grads trying to tell their parents and the world?

Bristol is a typical blow pop kinda kid and budding lollipop activist.

Just like her contemporaries finishing off with a GED and taking the walk is how it's done. She no doubt labored hard at the pool and helping her helpers with the on-line home school courses. It's nothing to crow about. Her family has the worst script writers in history. Can Adam Bellow save their skanky family persona? Not if they ever open their mouths again.
